WHAT’S A RISTRETTO COFFEE?

A ristretto coffee is a highly concentrated espresso shot known for its intense and bold flavour.

It is made using the same method as espresso but with a reduced amount of water, resulting in a smaller and more concentrated beverage. 

 

Typically, a ristretto shot contains about 15 to 20 ml of liquid, which is less than a standard espresso shot which usually measures around 30 ml. 

 

Despite the reduced volume, ristretto coffee is known for its rich, full-bodied flavour, lower bitterness compared to regular espresso, and a sweeter taste profile. 

 

It’s often favoured by coffee enthusiasts who appreciate a more intense and concentrated coffee experience.

 

HOW TO MAKE A RISTRETTO COFFEE

Step 1: Place coffee beans in a burr grinder to achieve a fine grind size, slightly finer than what you would use for an espresso.

Step 2:  Ensure the portafilter is clean and dry and place your coffee grounds into the portafilter. Make sure you fill it to the level recommended by your machine instructions and don’t overfill it. If you overfill it, the water won’t be able to pass through the coffee grinds as effectively and you won’t get the desired result.

Step 3: Tamp the coffee grounds firmly and evenly to ensure they are levelled properly in the portafilter. This step is crucial for a consistent extraction.

Step 4: Set your espresso machine to brew a ristretto if it has this option. Some machines come with pre-programmed settings. If your machine doesn’t have a ristretto setting, you’ll need to adjust it manually. To do this you only want to use between 15 to 20 ml of water and a brewing time of approximately 12 to 20 seconds.

Step 5: Once the extraction is complete, pour into your favourite cup and enjoy. Experiment with different beans, amount of water and brewing time until you find the perfect ristretto recipe for you!

If you want something similar to a ristretto but want to switch things up a bit then you can experiment with different coffee recipes. Here is a list of some of our favourites:

 

Espresso: If you’re looking for something that doesn’t taste as strong as a ristretto then try making a classic espresso shot. It offers a balanced flavour profile with a mix of sweetness, bitterness, and acidity. 

 

Lungo: A Lungo is the opposite of a ristretto. It’s made by using more water during the extraction process, resulting in a milder and more diluted coffee than ristretto or espresso. It’s ideal if you prefer a longer, less concentrated coffee.

 

Cortado: A cortado is an espresso “cut” with a small amount of warm milk. It strikes a balance between the intensity of ristretto and the creaminess of milk, creating a delightful coffee-milk fusion.

 

Macchiato: A macchiato is a shot of espresso with a small amount of frothy milk or milk foam. It’s a perfect choice if you want a touch of creaminess without overpowering or diluting the coffee flavour

Ristretto vs. Espresso

Ristretto and espresso are both well regarded in the world of coffee lovers, both for different qualities. A ristretto is made with the same measurement of coffee grounds as espresso but half the water (meaning it is a short shot) and a shorter extraction time. 

 

This method offers an intense, full-bodied, and sweet flavour with reduced bitterness as there isn’t time for that bitterness to be extracted. Espresso, in contrast, uses a balanced coffee-to-water ratio and extracts for 25-30 seconds, yielding a strong, balanced taste and using a larger volume of water during the brewing process yielding 25-30 ml shot. 

 

Despite the strong coffee flavour, a ristretto has slightly less caffeine than espresso due to the shorter extraction time. When it comes to which is the superior coffee, that is really a personal preference as both have their own unique qualities.

 

Is ristretto stronger than espresso?

In terms of flavour profiles, ristretto offers a more intense and concentrated taste compared to regular espresso. 

 

On the other hand, when it comes to caffeine content, an espresso shot provides a stronger energy boost than a ristretto shot due to its shorter brewing time, resulting in lower caffeine concentration. 

 

What is the point of ristretto?

Ristretto shots capture a higher concentration of the flavour compounds that readily dissolve from coffee grounds as the coffee beans are ground slightly finer. This limited extraction process results in a ristretto that is richer in body and exhibits less bitterness when compared to a fully extracted espresso.

 

It’s worth noting that due to the reduced water-to-ground ratio, the ristretto delivers a more concentrated flavour profile compared to a standard espresso shot. It boasts a fuller, bolder, and more full-bodied taste, often accompanied by subtle bitter notes.

 

Does a ristretto have A LOT OF caffeine IN IT?

Ristretto has a slightly lower caffeine content than espresso, typically ranging from 65 to 80 mg per serving. 

 

Compared to regular coffees that use a shot of espresso it doesn’t have as much. However, if you are avoiding caffeine for any reason then make sure you take that into consideration. 

 

Is a ristretto single or double shot?

A ristretto is typically a single ‘short’ shot. It is a concentrated and short coffee beverage that uses less water than a regular espresso shot. While espresso shots are often served as either single or double shots, a ristretto is a single shot that is even more concentrated.
