If you’re looking to save some money without sacrificing quality, making your coffee at home without a machine is a great option. It also allows you to explore different flavour profiles and brewing methods so you can find the perfect coffee for your taste buds.
Australians love their coffee. Whether it’s grabbing a quick cup on the way to work or catching up with a friend over a leisurely weekend brunch, coffee is a big part of our social culture.
But all those coffees can start to add up, especially if you opt for premium beans and brewing methods.
So, if you’re a coffee lover, why not give home brewing a try? Who knows, you might just discover your new favourite cuppa!
Tips for making the best coffee at home without a machine:
+ Get good quality coffee beans
+ Grind them yourself to preserve the flavour and aroma
+ Choose the brew method that best suits your taste
+ Keep experimenting!
Things you’ll need:
Coffee Scale
Weighing coffee with a coffee scale is the best way to measure it accurately and consistently. It’s also beneficial because a scale can be used for both dosing coffee and measuring your brew, as this allows you to make sure you have the correct coffee to water ratio.
When making espresso, it’s important to have a coffee scale that can measure individual grams at low weights. An ideal scale will have tenths of grams.
Coffee Storage Container
If you want your coffee to stay fresh and flavorful, it’s important to store it in a good quality coffee container. The best coffee storage containers are opaque, have a good seal, and have one-way valves.
The valve allows carbon dioxide to escape and prevents air from getting at the beans. Excess exposure to oxygen is primarily what causes beans to lose their flavour faster.
Coffee Measuring Spoon
Measuring coffee by weight with a food scale is more accurate than using a scoop because the density and size of coffee beans can vary. However, a coffee measuring spoon is easier to use and will work well for most basic home brewing methods.
It’s not as important to have a specific coffee measuring spoon as it is to use the same one each time you brew. This way, you can get used to the best ratio of coffee to water for that spoon. A regular tablespoon will even work alright.
Coffee Grinder
If you’re currently purchasing ground coffee, investing in a coffee grinder will have the biggest impact on your brews. Grinding beans right before brewing releases the compounds that make coffee so aromatic and have a much more wholesome flavour.
You’ll want to use a burr coffee grinder because they create evenly sized pieces of coffee beans. Blade coffee grinders chop the beans into uneven pieces, which can lead to an uneven extraction.
Burr grinders cost more than blade grinders, but they are worth the investment. Purchase the best quality burr grinder that you’re able to – and be sure it is suitable for your preferred brewing method.
Electric grinder: An electric grinder usually is very easy to use, you store your coffee beans in it and press a button when you want your coffee beans ground fresh, simple right?
Manual hand grinder: A manual hand grinder can take some practice to get used to a little more skill but it is a great skill to have for those that like the process of making the coffee themselves.
Hario V60 Coffee Dripper
The Hario V60 dripper is a popular choice for coffee enthusiasts who want to brew their coffee manually, as it is easy to use and produces a great cup of coffee. The V60 takes its name from its V-shaped cone with sides angled at 60 degrees, which helps to extract all the flavour from the coffee beans.
The spiral ridges inside the coffee dripper and the large hole at the base of the V60 help to enhance the flavour even further. The result is a clean, nuanced cup of coffee that is simply stunning.
The Hario V60 comes in different sizes and materials, so you can brew more than one cup at a time if you wish. We sell the V60 in glass, and ceramic colours teal, grey and pink.

Step 2: To get started, you’ll need to grind your serving size of coffee beans (usually 15g per serve) of coffee and place it in the filter.
Step 3: Pour in 50g of water that’s just off the boil.
Step 4: Stir to make sure all the grounds are wet, and wait 30 seconds. After 30 seconds have passed, continue to stir gently until all the grounds are fully saturated.

French Press
French press coffee is a method of brewing coffee that uses a device called a “French Press.” A French press is like a plunger that meets a strainer.
It allows you to brew ground coffee in a container by brewing, pressing , and straining all in one. If you want to start your day off on the right foot, begin by making a cup of French press coffee!
It’s a lot easier than you might think and you don’t need to be a coffee connoisseur to produce a great cup of coffee in less than 15 minutes.
The French press metal filter allows the coffee’s natural oils to pass through to your mug, resulting in a richly aromatic cup of coffee. These oils contribute greatly to the coffee’s flavour and overall appeal. Additionally, the metal filter also lets some microscopic coffee grounds into your mug. These tiny grounds enhance the flavour of the coffee and give it a “fuller” feeling that leaves you satisfied.
The brewing process happens by adding hot water to the ground coffee beans and letting it steep for a few minutes before pressing the plunger down to the bottom of the beaker, which filters out the grinds and leaves you with strong, bold, beautiful coffee.

The moka pot
The Moka Pot is a stovetop coffee maker that produces espresso-like coffee. It uses boiling water to force steam through the coffee grounds, so the coffee bubbles up into the pot versus dripping down like in brewed coffee
How to use the Moka pot?
+ Grind the coffee to a fine grind: espresso grind or just slightly larger.
+ Add cold filtered water to the bottom half of the pot until it reaches the valve.
+ Fill the funnel with coffee grounds level with the top, but don’t press the grinds down. Insert the funnel into the bottom portion of the pot. Screw the top onto the base until it is just finger tight.
+ Place the pot on the stove over medium heat. For a gas stove, make sure the gas flame is smaller than the width of the pot.
+ The coffee is ready when you hear a loud gurgling sound. This usually takes 5 to 7 minutes. Turn off the heat when you hear this sound.
