Coffee is a morning staple for many of us, but its uses go beyond just giving us a caffeine boost.
Recently, we discovered that coffee can also be used to stain wood. While coffee may awaken our souls and prepare us for the day ahead, its versatility demonstrates how this beloved beverage has even more potential than we previously realised.
Different ways to stain wood with coffee
Depending on how dark you want the stain will determine the method you use. We trialled three ways:
+ Using old coffee grounds
+ Using instant coffee with minimal water
+ Using a regular shot of coffee
WOOD STAINING USING COFFEE
Did you know that you can use coffee to restore the look of old wooden furniture? Not only is it a natural and easy-to-apply solution, but it also has incredible stain properties. Rather than spending money on traditional wood stains, try using coffee as an eco-friendly alternative!

+ Sandpaper
+ Sponge
+ Water
+ Your choice of Coffee grounds / instant coffee or a shot of coffee
+ Wood
STAINING WOOD WITH USED COFFEE GROUNDS
Staining wood with coffee grounds can be a simple and effective way to give your wooden surfaces a unique and natural look. We found it to give a strong and effective finish. It’s also nice, as you are recycling the coffee grounds in the process. This will only work on a flat piece of wood.
Prepare the coffee grounds: Start by collecting used coffee grounds. If you don’t have any on hand, you can make a fresh pot of coffee and save the grounds after brewing.
You can use wet or dried coffee grounds. If the coffee grounds are dry, then add some water to them, as this will draw the colour out of them.
Prepare the wood: Ensure that the wood surface you plan to stain is clean and free from any dirt, dust, or previous finishes. Sanding the wood lightly can help open up the pores and promote better absorption of the coffee stain. Then wipe over the wood with a sponge.
Soak the coffee grounds: If your coffee grounds are dry, place them in a container. Add enough hot water to create a concentrated coffee mixture. Stir the grounds and water together.
Apply the coffee stain: Apply the coffee grounds directly to the wood, and let it sit for as long as possible. We left ours for an hour.
Wipe away: Once you have left it, wipe the grounds away.
Allow the stain to dry: Let the coffee stain dry completely. This can take several hours, depending on the temperature and humidity. Avoid touching or disturbing the stained surface during the drying process.
Assess and repeat (if needed): Once the stain has dried, assess the colour. If you desire a darker shade, apply additional coats of coffee stain following the same method as before. Allow each layer to dry before applying the next.
STAINING WOOD WITH USED INSTANT COFFEE
This was also a very effective method for staining the wood, as you have a good control of how dark the wood will be. If you want the wood darker you add more coffee, and less water. If you do want not such a dark stain you add in more water.
Prepare the wood: Ensure that the wood surface you plan to stain is clean and free from any dirt, dust, or previous finishes. Sanding the wood lightly can help open up the pores and promote better absorption of the coffee stain. Then wipe over the wood with a sponge.
Prepare the stain: Use 2-3 tablespoons of coffee grounds. Add 2 tablespoons of boiling water – this will create a very dark stain like ours. Stir and let the coffee dissolve.
Apply the coffee stain: Apply the instant coffee mix directly to the wood with either a brush or a sponge. Let it sit for as long as possible. We left ours for an hour.
Allow the stain to dry: Let the coffee stain dry completely. This can take several hours, depending on the temperature and humidity. Avoid touching or disturbing the stained surface during the drying process.
Assess and repeat (if needed): Once the stain has dried, assess the colour. If you desire a darker shade, apply additional coats of coffee stain following the same method as before. Allow each layer to dry before applying the next.
STAINING WOOD WITH A SHOT OF COFFEE
This proved to be the least effective method to staining the wood as it’s harder to get it darker than what comes out of the coffee machine. It’s easier to make it lighter, you just add more water.
Prepare the wood: Ensure that the wood surface you plan to stain is clean and free from any dirt, dust, or previous finishes. Sanding the wood lightly can help open up the pores and promote better absorption of the coffee stain. Then wipe over the wood with a sponge.
Prepare the stain: Use 2-3 shots of coffee straight from your coffee espresso machine. No need to let it cool.
Apply the coffee stain: Apply the coffee directly to the wood with either a brush or a sponge. Let it sit for as long as possible. We left ours for an hour.
Allow the stain to dry: Let the coffee stain dry completely. This can take several hours, depending on the temperature and humidity. Avoid touching or disturbing the stained surface during the drying process.
