How to Grind Coffee Beans at Home Without a Machine

February 02, 2025

Do you have some delicious freshly roasted coffee beans, but no grinder in sight? We have come up with some bean grinding hacks.

Embarking on the journey of grinding coffee beans at home is a delightful and aromatic adventure that elevates the entire coffee experience as it allows you to tailor the grind size to suit your preferred brewing method.

Whether you’re an aspiring coffee connoisseur or a casual enthusiast, mastering the art of grinding at home opens a world of possibilities as well as helping save money.

In this guide, we’ll delve into the steps and techniques that will empower you to grind your own coffee beans at home without the fancy grinders used in cafes.

WAYS TO GRIND COFFEE BEANS AT HOME

When it comes to grinding coffee beans, the two most widely embraced methods involve the use of either a burr grinder or a blade grinder. Both options excel in delivering freshly ground coffee in a diverse range of sizes and textures, providing flexibility to cater to various brewing methods.

What happens though when you don’t have a coffee grinder? What are some things around the house you could use to get a similar result?

BLENDER/FOOD PROCESSOR

A blender can be used to get coarse coffee grounds. To do this pour a ¼ cup of coffee beans into the blender, ensuring a secure lid closure.

If your blender has a grinding setting then use that, if not make sure you use the ‘pulse’ setting. Grinding the beans in intervals of 3 to 5 seconds, if you blend for longer it creates heat which can alter the taste of the beans.

Limit the repetition of this process to a maximum of 30 secs.

These steps ensure a controlled and efficient grinding process, producing grounds suitable for your desired coffee preparation. If you need more coffee grounds then repeat this process.

HOW DO YOU GRIND COFFEE BEANS WITHOUT A MACHINE?

MORTAR AND PESTLE

Utilize the traditional method of a mortar and pestle to grind coffee beans into a fine powder of grounds.

Commence the process by placing a small quantity of coffee into the mortar. Securely hold the mortar with one hand while using the dominant hand to grasp the pestle firmly, to prevent slipping.

Apply force with the pestle, ensuring every corner of the coffee beans is ground for uniformity. Following the initial crushing, enhance the texture by rolling the coffee grounds with the pestle.

Despite the growing fineness, persist with the grinding and rolling motion until achieving the desired texture and consistency.

This method, while demanding some effort, offers a personalized and hands-on approach to coffee grinding.

ROLLING PIN

Achieving a medium-fine texture of consistently uniform coffee grounds requires some effort when using a rolling pin.

The unique design of a rolling pin makes it an unexpectedly effective tool for crushing and grinding coffee beans. With precision and technique, a rolling pin can produce coffee grounds with a medium to fine texture.

To employ this method, gather a rolling pin, a large cutting board, and a ziplock bag.

Place the desired amount of coffee in the bag, lay it flat on the board or counter, and utilize the rolling pin as a hammer to crush and roll over the beans, adjusting until achieving the desired consistency.

If the grounds remain too coarse, continue the crushing process for a finer grind.

HAMMER

Opt for a mallet, hammer, or meat tenderiser to crush coffee beans and achieve a coarse to medium grind.

While this alternative method provides a straightforward way to crack and crush beans, exercise caution to prevent any damage to your countertop.

This technique is particularly suitable for those who prefer a coarser texture. Begin by placing your coffee beans in a plastic bag or between sheets of parchment paper. Apply downward force with your chosen tool, such as a hammer, to crush the beans until they reach the desired consistency.

To ensure uniformity, crush from one side of the bag to the other, promoting a consistent texture throughout.

A KNIFE

This method should be used as a last result as it does pose a risk of injury.

To grind using a butcher knife, place the coffee beans on a cutting board, lay the knife flat on the beans, and apply firm pressure with your palm to attain the desired consistency by crushing the beans.

Can you grind coffee beans in a blender or food processor?

Yes, you can grind coffee beans with a blender.

Using a regular kitchen blender equipped with blades, you can achieve a coarse to medium grind suitable for various brewing methods.

They are not the preferred method as a blender doesn’t get a consistent texture throughout often resulting in a mix of coarse and fine grounds.

How long do ground beans last?

To ensure freshness, store either ground coffee or whole beans in an opaque, airtight container in a pantry, away from light, heat, and moisture.

Vacuum-sealed containers, widely available, prove highly effective for convenient freshness. Regardless of effective sealing or roasting quality, all coffee grounds come with a limited shelf life.

As a general practice, it is recommended to consume purchased coffee within a month, with ground coffee ideally used within a week for optimal freshness.

Avoid storing coffee in the fridge as moisture can build up and will alter the quality of the grounds.
