What is a Magic Coffee? How Do I Order it?

Melbourians love their coffee. So it’s no wonder they have come up with their own secret ‘Magic’ coffee. So what is a magic coffee? Let us let you in on the secret. Welcome to the world of magic coffee. All coffee is pretty magic you might say. But a magic coffee – is actually a new coffee order that originated in Melbourne, and is often not on the menu.

It is rather uncommon to find this delicacy listed on menus beyond the city limits of Melbourne. Hence, most people have never heard of it.

What exactly is a magic coffee?

Magic Coffee

A magic coffee is a double shot of ristretto (a coffee shot more potent than an espresso) with a three-quarter flat white (little or no foam). It is meant to be the most perfect and easy to drink coffee. Hence, magic.

Steps to Make a Magic Coffee

To truly experience the enchantment of a “magic” coffee, the key lies in achieving the ideal proportions. The precise measurements of espresso and milk are of utmost importance.

Step 1: A clean machine: Clean your coffee machine thoroughly to ensure optimal performance and the best-tasting coffee.

Step 2: The perfect cup: A magic coffee uses a 5 oz cup. This is a slightly smaller sized cup than what a flat white or a cappuccino is served in.

Step 3: The ristretto: Next is to create a perfectly balanced double ristretto, which is a double espresso, carefully prepared with a precise cut-off midway through the extraction process. While a single shot of espresso typically measures 30ml, a ristretto is a condensed version with a volume of 20ml. Consequently, a double ristretto embodies the ideal harmony with its 40ml of rich and indulgent coffee.

Step 4: The milk: Should be similar to that of a flat white. The crucial aspect lies in creating just the right amount of micro foam, as excessive foam may not suit the desired outcome. The temperature of the milk should not be excessively hot, but rather slightly cooler to ensure a quick and enjoyable drinking experience.

Step 5: Pour the milk: To create a truly magic coffee, the final step is the fusion of ristretto and milk. For an added touch of elegance, one may even add some coffee art. It is crucial to maintain precise proportions in this endeavour, aiming for a perfect blend of a 50-50 ratio of milk and espresso.

Is a magic coffee just a flat white?

No, a magic coffee is not the same as a flat white. While both are coffee drinks, they have different ratios. The ratio of espresso to milk is higher in a magic coffee compared to a flat white, resulting in a stronger and more intense coffee flavour.

Unlike a magic coffee, the milk in a flat white is not steamed to create foam, but instead, it is heated and textured to create a smooth and velvety milk texture. The ratio of milk to espresso is higher in a flat white, making it a creamier and milder coffee option compared to a magic coffee. So, while both drinks are delicious and made with espresso, a magic coffee and a flat white have distinct differences in preparation, milk texture, and coffee flavour.

How to order a Magic Coffee

So, now you know what a Magic Coffee is. Let’s talk about how to order one.

The point of the magic coffee is that it is meant to be magic. It’s meant to be perfect as it is. So let’s order just that.

If you are in Melbourne, go up and ask “Can I have a magic coffee?’.

If the barista looks back at you with a weird quizzical look on their face, they obviously do not know what a magic coffee is, and just ask for something else.

Those ‘in the know’, will nod and take your order.
